Happy New Year!

I can't believe we are in 2012 and that we are half way done with the school year! Third quarter has a lot of new standards to master, so we will be very busy!

In math, we are starting geometry, which includes measuring angles and finding the area of quadrilaterals, triangles, compound figures, and circles.

In science, we will cover matter, physical and chemical changes, and electricity and magnetism.

We well also be working on complex sentences in Shurley English and writing persuasive papers.

Boosterthon is coming!!! We will have our Boosterthon pep rally this Tuesday at 1:30. I am so excited to have the Boosterthon team in our building!

Math Project!

I assigned a math project Tuesday. It is a children's book of fractions. Your child received the directions and rubric that I will be using to grade the projects. Students are allowed to work on the project in math, but only after their seat work is finished. The majority of the project will be finished at home. If you would like a copy of the directions and rubric, please let me know.

The project is due Wednesday, December 14!

December

We only have three weeks until Christmas Break! We have a lot to learn, and these three weeks are going to fly by!

Friday, December 2- Morgan will be performing in Gainesville's Nutcracker Ballet. Our class will leave about 11:30 to go support her. Please make sure you send in your child's permission slip and $5 by Thursday. Thank you!

Math- We will be subtracting mixed numbers with renaming, multiplying and dividing fractions, and exploring graphs and percentages. We have a math test this Friday, December 2nd over factors, multiples, LCM, GCF, comparing fractions, adding/subtracting fractions, and adding/subtracting mixed numbers. We will review everything that will be on the test Thursday.

Science- We will be completing our classification unit by studying plants. Each child chose an animal to research before Thanksgiving Break. We will be using that research to write a paper during writing time. Next, we will be studying heredity and genetics.

Shurley English/Writing- We will be completing Chapter 5 this week and having a test this Thursday, December 1st. The students will begin writing their research paper on their chosen animal.

Best Friends!

Two Lost Souls

After losing his parents, this 3 year old orangutan was so depressed he wouldn't eat and didn't respond to any medical treatments. The veterinarians thought he would surely die from sadness.

The zoo keepers found an old sick dog on the grounds in the park at the zoo where the orangutan lived and took the dog to the animal treatment center. The dog arrived at the same time the orangutan was there being treated.

The 2 lost souls met and have been inseparable ever since.

The orangutan found a new reason to live and each always tries his best to be a good companion to his new found friend.

They are together 24 hours a day in all their activities.

They live in Northern California where swimming is their favorite past time, although Roscoe (the orangutan)
is a little afraid of the water and needs his friend's help to swim.

Together they have discovered the joy and laughter in life and the value of friendship.

My mom sent this to me in an email. I couldn't resist sharing it with you all! It definitely brightened my day!

November 14-18

We have a lot going on this week!

Mrs. Salyers started Junior Achievement with our class last week and will continue this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

We are visiting the Fernbank Museum this Thursday!! I am so excited to explore the museum! If you signed up to go with our class, please arrive a few minutes before 8:30.

Friday, we will have a dessert feast after activity. If you are able, please send in any type of dessert!

I will be giving homework over the break. (GASP!) I'm only assigning one homework page, but please make sure your child is practicing math facts and reading. We don't want them to forget everything over the nine day break!

Lastly, enjoy your break! I hope you all have a wonderful time relaxing and spending time with your family. I will miss everyone!
